EXCERPT:

“I’m looking for a woman who just came in. Gorgeous redhead in a green dress?”

The man raised a brow and Luke realized he probably sounded like a stalker.

“Reagan Deveraux,” Luke added. “I was supposed to meet her in the lobby.”

“I believe the woman you’re looking for went into the lounge.”

Luke thanked the man and headed toward where he pointed. He found Rae sitting at the bar throwing back a shot of tequila. He had no idea she did shots. He’d only ever seen her sip beer. Now she was licking salt from her hand like a pro. He watched, transfixed, as her red lips closed over a wedge of lime and sucked.

He wasn’t the only man watching.

Luke felt a jab of jealously when a designer-suited dude eased in and offered to buy her a drink.  Then a surge of relief when Rae turned the man away. Luke cursed his whacked-out emotions.  He shouldn’t be feeling anything for Rae aside from betrayal and confusion.

He joined her at the bar. “What are you doing?”

“Treating myself to a birthday drink.” She barely cast him a glance while attacking her second shot.

Luke clenched his jaw as she repeated the ritual. Salt, tequila, lime. Lick, drink, suck. Not overtly sexy, but sexy all the same. He gestured to the bartender. “Two Coronas, please.” Then he looked back to Rae. “Drinking alone on your birthday is sort of pathetic.”

“I’m not alone.” She met his gaze.  “Unfortunately.”

Luke searched her eyes, his gut clenching when he caught a glimpse of Rachel Lacey, the same vulnerability that had intrigued him all those months ago. He had a weakness for women in need. Hell, he had a weakness for women period.

The bartender served two longnecks.

Luke waved off the glasses.

“Put it on my tab,” Rae said.

“It’s on me.” Luke paid cash for two of the most expensive beers he’d ever bought in his life.

“As for the cab,” he said to Rae, “thank you, but I can manage.” He pulled five twenties from his wallet and when she refused, he shoved the money in her purse. “Three months ago you were desperate for money. Or so you said. Jayce called you a trust fund baby. You might not have inherited your fortune until today, but you must have had access to a monthly allowance.”

“I didn’t want to touch that money.”

“Why not?”

“I can’t believe you had me investigated.”

She sounded somewhere between hurt and outraged. Luke knew the feeling. “I had you tracked, which I wouldn’t have done if you had had the decency to say good-bye.”

Gaze averted, she sipped her beer then ordered another shot. “I felt awful about hurting Sam.

Plus I was compromising the success of the Cupcake Lover’s recipe book by refusing to participate in any publicity.”

“So you ran away?”

“I didn’t think I’d be missed.”

What the freaking hell? “Are you that insecure or that oblivious?”

“People come and go all the time, Luke.”

“You’re missing the point, Rae.” He nabbed her wrist as she reached for the salt shaker. Her pulse raced beneath his thumb.  His own heart bucked. He’d always had a talent for reading and finessing women. He had no clue how to handle Rae. Did she have the tolerance to withstand a third shot? He didn’t want to take the chance. He grabbed her shooter and downed the Cuervo himself.  “Why don’t we sit at one of those tables and talk?”

“Why aren’t you on your way to the airport?”

“Why won’t you tell me why you paid for a false identity?

She glanced away, picked at the label on the beer bottle. “I needed to be someone else for a while.”

“Why?”

“It’s personal.”

One thing hadn’t changed. Reagan Devereaux was every bit as aloof as Rachel Lacey. Luke wanted to shake the crap out of her. Kissing her came to mind, too.  He’d never been so angry and turned on at the same time. He told himself it was because she was smoking hot and he’d been celibate for weeks. Aching to jump her bones was natural. It wasn’t because he was jonesing to re-create the magic he’d felt the one and only time they’d locked lips. Who needed that kind of misery? Having a thing for a woman beyond his reach. A woman of privileged birth. A woman who’d earned a master’s degree. A woman worth a freaking million!

Hit the road, Monroe.

He wasn’t getting the answers he wanted so why was he wasting his time? As it was he’d be lucky if he got home before Christmas morning.  Part of him had been desperate to see for himself that Rae was okay. She was more than okay.  Except for her obsessive lying and the tension between her and her mom and that dickhead Geoffrey Stein. Every family had drama, right? The Monroes certainly had their fair share. More often than not, Luke played mediator. He should be home making peace, not here waging war. Besides, reasoning with this woman was a losing battle.

Luke reached down for his backpack and when he straightened the infuriating enigma was finishing off another shot.

For the love of. . .

He couldn’t leave Rae in this bar.  What if she drank herself under the table? What if one of the several men watching took advantage?

“Do you think your mom and Stein left the house yet?”

“I’m sure of it. God forbid they miss a moment of the party.”

“Then come on. I’ll drop you home before I head to the airport.”

“I’m not going home.” She flashed a key card. “I’m staying here tonight.”

“Then I’ll walk you to your room.”

“Not necessary.” She stood, swaying a little on those sexy four-inch heels.
Luke groaned. “Humor me.”

[Review] Thief - Tarryn Fisher

Released: July 21st, 2013

Note to Self

Love is patient; love is kind.
Love doesn't boast or brag.
There's no arrogance in love;
it's never rude, crude, or indecent-it's not self-absorbed
Love isn't easily upset.
Love doesn't tally wrongs.
Love trusts, hopes, and endures no matter what.
Love will never become obsolete.
I'll fight for her.

Thief.

Caleb Drake never got over his first love. Not when he got married. Not when she got married. When life suddenly comes full circle, Caleb must decide how far he is willing to go to get the aloof and alluring Olivia Kaspen back. But for every action in life, there is a consequence, and soon Caleb finds out that sometimes love comes at an unbearably high price.

"There is no such thing as a clean slate. I know that now. You just embrace your dirty slate and build over it."
THE HOT COVER IS BACK!!! Honestly, The Opportunist had a freaking gorgeous cover and then Dirty Red was just bleghhh. I hated it. And now with Caleb, IT'S BACK!!!

The Love Me With Lies series absolutely tore me apart with each heart-breaking ending. The final book to the trilogy just ripped me apart. Caleb and Olivia had an unbelievably riveting journey and they made me believe in the idea of soulmates as they overcome and highest and the lowest of their seemingly star-crossed tale. Their love was an emotional roller coaster, mostly with its dips, and now the biggest drop is set right here in this finale.

I am so glad that I decided to read this book because it was the best one yet out of the whole series. I remember reading the first novel and being torn between throwing the book out the window and weeping over it. Boy am I glad I decided to finish the series.

Seeing the relationship through Caleb's eyes was utterly heart-wrenching and frustrating. We see how all the misunderstandings and their wrong decisions had shaped them to the people they are today. We see how the characters are overcome with regret and pain as they try to mask their guilt and past mistakes.

God, this book was fucking aggravating (in a good way!). I loved every bit of it. I couldn't put it down when I started it.

They are freaking soulmates and no one can deny it. Really. Fucking soulmates, man.
"She's mine. She always has been, she always will be. We've been running in opposite directions for the last ten years, and we collide at every turn. Sometimes, it's because we're looking for each other, other times it's fate."
They always – and I do mean, always – come back to each other.

Olivia is Olivia. Caleb is Caleb. They're both broken in a way.
"Olivia was so beautifully broken. The hairline cracks in her personality were more pieces of art than flaws. I loved flawed art."
God, that was it. Caleb knew from the fucking second he saw Olivia that he was going to end up with her. He never had to work for shit all his life, everything came easy for him. But then there's Olivia who made him do what seemed like the impossible. Who challenged him. She made him try.

But you know what.
"Life does not accommodate you, it shatter you. Love is mean, but it's good. It keeps us alive."
And the characters. Sweet. Jesus. They are all so fucking perfect and so beautifully and amazingly developed. The relationship? A fucking PLUS. The quotes they had in the book. Christ. I highlighted so many phrases in my iPad. Here are a few of my favorite for their relationship:
"She could refuse to have sex with me every day for the rest of our lives and I still would choose her. That's how deep I was in this."
"We'll never be over. If you think that little piece of metal on your finger can shield off your feelings for me, you're wrong. I wore one for five years and there wasn't a day that went by where I wasn't wishing it were you."
"We're not building anything. We've been in a relationship since before we were actually in a relationship."
"You couldn't sum Olivia and me up to nostalgia."
Caleb's Mom: "She will be your destruction. She's not healthy."Caleb: "Then let her destroy me."
I'm sorry. I just have so many choices.

But I freaking loved Cammie, even though she did do a few shitty things in the past.
"It's his massive penis, isn't it? He could just smack Dobson with it and he'd–"
"So, do you know what you're having… boy… girl… seed of Chucky?"
Gotta love that girl's honesty.

Honestly, I could go on and on about this book but I don't want to spoil it for you guys so. Here are a few final quotes I abso-freaking-lutely loved:
"People are so messed up. All of us. We just hurt each other."
"How many times can a heart be broken before it is beyond mend? How many times can I wish to not be alive? How can one human being cause such a crack in my existence?"
To sum it up:
"Broken people give broken love. And we are all a little broken. You just have to forgive and sew up the wounds love delivers, and move on."

Minor Faults:
  • "I am so sad." OUT OF ALL THE AMAZING PHRASES IN THE BOOK, WHY WOULD YOU ADD THIS???? This was the only fault I found. I was just like: "What. Did Fisher really put this in."

MY RATING:

5 SOMEONE-HOLD-ME APPLES!!!!!

[Review] Insanity - Lauren Hammond

Released: May 8th, 2012

Adelaide Carmichael and Damien Allen couldn't be more opposite.

Adelaide's mother abandoned her when she was ten years old, leaving her to be raised by her abusive and alcoholic father.

Damien on the other hand came from a wealthy family, was a local celebrity, and seemed to have a bright future ahead of him.

Despite their differences, Adelaide were young, wild, and fiercely in love.

And they had a plan.

They were going to run away.

Be together forever.

And their plan was set in motion, until tragedy struck and for some reason, Adelaide wound up in The Oakhill Institution for the insane.

Adelaide has no idea what she did to wind up at Oakhill, but she knows one thing for sure…

She wants out.

And after Damien follows her there to aid her escaping, Adelaide slowly begins putting together the pieces of her memory that are missing.

And it doesn't take Adelaide long to figure out that sometimes…

That one true love never dies.
"But life is pain. Life is chaos. It's never easy. Always a struggle."
I had mixed feelings about this book. It was really good honestly because the plotline? A++. It was so freaking good and unique, y'know. The story was wonderful and twisted, so fucking confusing. But the characters? Ehh, I didn't like Damien honestly.

You delve into the confusing and frustrating world of Adelaide Carmichael as she tries to figure out and remember who she was before she lost her memory. It was a twisted, emotional and utterly aggravating journey.

God, this book was so fucking confusing most of the time. I was like trying to figure out what was going on. Though, I really liked how the author alternated between the past and the present, which reminds me of Tarryn Fisher's writing style. But, God, I hated how fast-paced the past was, even though I'm guessing that's because she wants to make sure that everything gets settled into the book.

Oakhill is fucking creepy but I loved Addy's description of it.
"It is a fabrication that entices people from the outside with its rose bushes, lush landscaping, massive red-brick building, and fake friendly staff.
This place is not a medical institution.
This place is a slaughterhouse.
And just like pigs, people are brought here to die."

Like, the place was unbelievably creepy, well it is an asylum after all. But still. I mean, the only sane doctor there was probably Dr. Watson. Mmm, Dr. Watson. I'll get into him later. But, like Marjorie and Dr. Morrow. JESUS CHRIST. They were so freaking weird.

I mean seriously, Dr. Morrow had an electrocution method to heal patients. WTF right?

Addy was pretty cool though. She's just mentally deranged? I guess? Or maybe she's not? I'm not even sure myself. But then her roommate is hilarious. I loved her, well, up until the end when she totally ratted her out.

But then Damien. Fuck. I hated him. I really like alpha males right, so I guess I'm being a bit biased, but then he was being like a whiny teenage girl. And he seems "so in love" with Addy that it's so freaking weird. Even though some of his lines are romantic.
"Addy, you are my sun, my moon, and my stars. You are my heaven, my hell, and my earth. I'd go anywhere with you. I'd follow you anywhere."
Creep, much? I know, I'm a super romantic but super cliché words like these just turn me off.

God, he sounds so desperate sometimes.
"I was just thinking about how lost I was until I found you. And I was also thinking about how much I love you."

I would've given this book lower if it wasn't for the mindfucking ending. The ending? A+++++++++ It was so mind-blowing that I probably stared at the page for 5 minutes.

Minor Faults:
  • FUCKING DAMIEN MAN. I really don't get that dude.

MY RATING:

3 AND A HALF APPLES!!!!!
